On Tuesday, 23 January 2024 a joint hearing on “The European Union’s Strategy in the Sahel” will be organised by the Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Committee on Development and the Sub-Committee on Security and Defence. It will be an opportunity to critically reflect on the EU's policy and approach towards this important region in light of recent coup d’états.
The hearing will take a holistic approach that looks at the full picture of the root causes of instability in the region and the EU's policy towards the Sahel until now. It will allow MEPs to discuss ways in which the EU's strategy should be adapted to ensure that the EU's security, development, humanitarian and democracy-support assistance contributes to lasting sustainable development and enhanced security in this vital region and complements the efforts of the EU's partners.

Emmanuel Macron hat am Dienstag (16. Januar) auf einer Pressekonferenz im Élysée-Palast neue Regeln für die Verringerung der Bildschirmzeit von Jugendlichen vorgeschlagen. Damit soll die Verbreitung von Verschwörungstheorien im Internet verhindert werden.

Mit überwältigender Mehrheit hat das EU-Parlament seine Verhandlungsposition zu den EU-Regeln für nationale Schulden und Defizite angenommen. Die Grünen fürchten, dass dies zu neuen Sparmaßnahmen führen und die Europäische Union destabilisieren könnte.

Eine neue Studie der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO), die am Dienstag (16. Januar) veröffentlicht wurde, zeigt, dass die Covid-19-Impfungen 1,4 Millionen Menschenleben in Europa gerettet haben.

Die NATO-Mitglieder und die Verteidigungsindustrie müssten verstärkt den militärischen Anforderungen gerecht werden und sich auf alle Eventualitäten vorbereiten. Man befinde sich "in einer Ära, in der jederzeit alles passieren kann", sagte Chef des NATO-Militärausschusses Rob Bauer.

EU-Kommissionspräsidentin Ursula von der Leyen erklärte am Mittwoch (17. Januar) vor dem Europäischen Parlament, sie sei "zuversichtlich", dass Ungarn sein Veto gegen die Ukraine-Hilfe aufgeben werde. Allerdings könnte Budapests neue Allianz mit der Slowakei die Dinge noch verkomplizieren.

Die wichtigsten europäischen Gewerkschaftsorganisationen haben ihre tiefe Besorgnis über das Ausmaß der rückläufigen industriellen Entwicklung in der EU geäußert. Denn die strukturell hohen Energiepreise und die EU-Schuldenpolitik setzen der wirtschaftlichen Säulen der EU weiter zu.

Das Parlament hat am Mittwoch EU-Vorschriften verlangt, die für Fairness und Nachhaltigkeit in der Musikstreaming-Branche sorgen und die kulturelle Vielfalt fördern.

Der Umweltausschuss des EU-Parlaments (ENVI) wird demnächst über neue Gentechniken (NGTs) abstimmen. Das Dossier führt zu zunehmenden Meinungsverschiedenheiten, wobei die konservativen Fraktionen den Entwurf befürworten, die Kräfte links der Mitte jedoch unentschlossen sind.

Am Mittwochmorgen diskutierten die Abgeordneten über den EU-Gipfel im Dezember, den bevorstehenden Sondergipfel am 1. Februar und die Lage in Ungarn.
