The EU’s annual report on arms export control presently lags behind the national reports of many countries. The introduction of a searchable online database will be a substantial step in increasing the user-friendliness of the report. This paper makes recommendations with regard to readability, comprehensiveness and comparability. Perhaps the principal recommendation is that steps be taken to harmonise the data provided under the categories ‘licensed value’ and ‘actual exports’, which are presently not consistently interpreted across the EU. The main argument of this paper is that the EU should move towards using data visualisation to complement the lengthy statistical tables in the annual report and thus make it more readable. The EU and its Member States should also explore opportunities to enhance the data contained in the report to include additional identified data fields, narrative sections to complement the statistical data, and disaggregated data on licence denials. In identifying additional data fields that could be included, the paper also examines the challenges associated with the provision of the data in each case.

Die Eurogruppe wird morgen über das Urteil des Bundesverfassungsgerichts zum umstrittenen Anleihekaufprogramm der EZB diskutieren, aber nach Angaben von EU-Quellen nicht offiziell Stellung beziehen. 

Heute entscheidet der Bundestag über eine deutsche Beteiligung an der neuen Mittelmeeroperation Irini. Doch die Grundprämissen des Einsatzes sind falsch und der Situation in Libyen damit nicht geholfen, meint Tobias Pietz.

Die ungarische Regierung hat angekündigt, man wolle bestimmte in den EU Datenschutzgesetzen festgelegte Maßnahmen aussetzen, bis der Ausnahmezustand aufgehoben ist.

Nach zweimaliger Verzögerung wird die Europäische Kommission - laut ihrer wöchentlichen "indikativen" Agenda - am 20. Mai ihre lang erwartete Lebensmittelpolitik, die "Farm-to-Fork-Strategie" (F2F) vorstellen.

Die EU hat gegenüber den Westbalkanstaaten ihre "unmissverständliche Unterstützung" für deren "europäische Perspektive" bekräftigt. Konkrete Zusagen zum EU-Beitritt wurden jedoch nicht gemacht.

Heute u.a. mit dabei: Ungarn ist laut Freedom House keine eindeutige Demokratie mehr. Außerdem: In Deutschland gibt es Lockerungen mit Handbremse, und in Frankreich viele Todesfälle.

Zum 75. Jahrestag des Endes des Zweiten Weltkriegs hat der Präsident des Zentralrats der Juden in Deutschland, Josef Schuster, Zweifel daran geäußert, dass die Deutschen hinreichende Lehren aus der Nazi-Vergangenheit gezogen haben.

Griechenlands Hoteliers befürchten, dass in Corona-Zeiten keine Touristen mehr kommen. Kaum erholt von der Schuldenkrise, steht Hellas vor einer weiteren harten Bewährungsprobe.

Der EU-Westbalkan-Gipfel von Zagreb hat am 6. Mai 2020 in Form einer Videokonferenz stattgefunden. Die Führungsspitzen der EU verständigten sich auf die Erklärung von Zagreb, der sich die Partner im Westbalkan angeschlossen haben.
