Vom 23. bis 26. Mai nahmen 200 000 000 Wähler in den 28 EU-Mitgliedstaaten an der Europawahl teil, um die Abgeordneten des Europäischen Parlaments zu wählen.

Nachdem die Abgeordneten die Eignung der designierten Kommissionsmitglieder geprüft haben, werden sie am 27. November darüber abstimmen, ob sie die neue Kommission ins Amt wählen.

Laut einem EVP-Antrag soll eine schnellere EU-Annäherung dreier Länder der Östlichen Partnerschaft erreicht werden: Moldawien, Georgien und die Ukraine haben ohnehin als Ziel ausgegeben, eines Tages EU-Mitglieder zu werden.

The Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Subcommittee on Human Rights and the Committee on Development will hold an exchange of views with last year's laureate of the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. Mr Sentsov is a Ukrainian film director who had been sentenced to 20 years in prison for "plotting terrorist acts" against the Russian "de facto" rule in Crimea. After spending more than five years behind bars, he was released from prison in September this year as part of a major prisoner swap between Russia and Ukraine.
