Spy agencies in the UK and the Netherlands are restricting the intelligence they share with Austria given its Russia ties, opposition lawmaker Peter Pilz
told Reuters news agency. Pilz said Western intelligence agencies are refusing to cooperate with Austria's main intelligence agency, the BVT. "Those are to my knowledge British agencies, in particular MI5, and the Dutch intelligence agency," he said.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu appears poised to win the national election following a tight race with his rival, former general Benny Gantz. The EU and US have stepped up talks of trade tariffs over a 15-year old World Trade Organisation (WTO) dispute on aid to rival aircraft makers, Airbus and Boeing. US president Donald Trump threatened to impose surcharges on €10bn of EU products, such as wine and cheese if the WTO found in its favour. The EU would also "promptly take action" if the WTO verdict said it had been victimised.

Russia's National Central Bureau has asked international police agency Interpol to seek the arrest of Bill Browder, a British campaigner for tougher sanctions on Russia, over tax fraud allegations. The police body rejected six previous Russian requests on grounds they were politically-motivated, but Browder was briefly arrested in Spain last year due to glitches in Interpol's system. He has called for Russia to be banned from issuing further requests.

The EU is still "on track" towards its goal of 20 percent of 2020 energy coming from renewables, but mostly because of pre-2014 progress, the European Commission said Tuesday. It said "the pace of increase of the renewable energy share has slowed down" and increases in absolute energy consumption has lowered the renewable share in 2017 in seven EU states. In France, Ireland, Poland and elsewhere, "additional efforts" were needed.

The EU is "at risk" of failing to reach its 2020 energy savings target, the European Commission said in a report Tuesday. Primary energy consumption (including consumption of the energy sector itself) rose by 0.9% in 2017. Energy use had decreased in 2007-2014, but is rising again. The commission said that "in recent years, energy savings were not high enough to offset the impact of the growth in economic activity."
