Unterausschuss für Sicherheit und Verteidigung (SEDE) - Europäisches Parlament

The constitutive meeting of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE) took place in Brussels on 23 July 2024 following the appointment of members in the plenary sitting of 16-19 July 2024. At the constitutive meeting, Marie-Agnes STRACK-ZIMMERMANN (Renew, Germany) was elected as SEDE Chair. Four Vice-Chairs were also elected for a two-and-a-half year mandate.

The SEDE Subcommittee is organising an in camera High-Level Seminar in cooperation with the European Defence and Security College/EEAS on 4 and 5 September 2024 in Brussels. (For Members only)

The constitutive meeting of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE) took place in Brussels on 23 July 2024 following the appointment of members in the plenary sitting of 16-19 July 2024. At the constitutive meeting, Marie-Agnes STRACK-ZIMMERMANN (Renew, Germany) was elected as SEDE Chair. Four Vice-Chairs were also elected for a two-and-a-half year mandate.

The next meeting of the SEDE Subcommittee is scheduled to take place place on Wednesday, 4 September 2024 from 14.30 to 18.30hrs in room SPINELLI 1E2 (Brussels).

The constitutive meetings of the European Parliament's standing committees and subcommittees took place in Brussels on 23 July 2024, following the appointments of their members in the plenary sitting of 16-19 July 2024. During the constitutive meetings, each committee and subcommittee is electing its respective bureau, made up of a Chair and Vice-Chairs, for a two-and-a-half year mandate. The newly set up committees then starts holding their regular meetings during the same week following their constitutive meeting.

The SEDE constitutive meeting took place on Tuesday, 23 July 2024 from 13.00 to 13.30hrs in room József Antall 4Q2 (Brussels). The meeting was webstreamed.

Citizens in the EU Member States will elect their representatives to the European Parliament during the European elections of 6 to 9 June. The newly elected Members, representing EU citizens until 2029, will meet in July to elect their President, Vice-Presidents and Quaestors. They will decide on the composition of Parliament's standing and sub committees - thereby launching the new legislative term. The committees will then hold their first meetings to elect their respective Chairs and Vice-Chairs.

On 19 March, Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for Internal Market, presented to the SEDE Members the newly released European Defence Industrial Strategy (EDIS) together with the proposed European Defence Industry Programme (EDIP), which set ambitious targets to enhance the defence readiness of the European Union and its Member States. ...
In camera, a tour d'horizon on EU security and defence priorities was given by the EEAS Deputy Secretary General Charles Fries and SEDE Members held an exchange of views with the EEAS and Rear Admiral Vasileios Gryparis, Operation Commander of EUNAVFOR ASPIDES on the Red Sea crisis and the establishment of the CSDP defensive maritime security operation EUNAVFOR ASPIDES.

On 14 February, SEDE MEPs held an exchange of views with the NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană on the security situation in the Black Sea, on the Eastern Flank and in the Western Balkans. This was an opportunity to reiterate our unwavering support to Ukraine, two years after the start of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. ...
Enhancing the EU's CSDP Mission in Armenia was discussed - in camera - with Stefano Tomat, Civilian Operations Commander and Managing Director for Civilian Planning and Conduct Capability, EEAS and Markus Ritter, Head of Mission of the European Union Mission in Armenia (EUMA). In addition, SEDE Members discussed hybrid warfare and the "EU Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference Threats-2023" with Aude Maio-Coliche, Director for Strategic Communication and Foresight at the EEAS.

On 24 January, SEDE MEPs held an exchange of views on the spill-over from the Israel-Hamas war in the escalation in the Red sea and in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. They also exchanged views with Jiří Šedivý, Chief Executive of the European Defence Agency, on EU's defence capability priorities and progress in addressing critical capability gaps.
Ukraine remained as well high on the SEDE agenda with its regular update - in camera - on the European Peace Facility's role in providing military equipment for Ukraine and on the EU's Military Assistance Mission for Ukraine, with Lt Gen Michiel van der Laan, Director General of the EU Military Staff.
