Ausschuss für Auswärtige Angelegenheiten (AFET) - Europäisches Parlament

On 21 January, AFET will debate external policy priorities with Gordan Grlić Radman, Croatia's Minister of Foreign and European Affairs. The Minister and MEPs will discuss the upcoming challenges and possible solutions, as Croatia takes the lead of the Council in a very critical time for the European Union.
During this Presidency, the EU will strive to agree on its multiannual budget, to restore credibility to its enlargement policy and will continue to be actively engaged in both its East and South neighbourhood. Brexit, Africa and transatlantic relations will also be high on the foreign affairs agenda.

On 21 January, the Committee on Foreign Affairs will hold a public hearing on the future of the Eastern Partnership. The Members will discuss with experts the achievements and shortcomings of the Eastern Partnership both at the regional and multilateral level. They will also analyse possible evolution of the EU's relations with its six Eastern partners and a way forward for the Eastern Partnership in the next decade.
The hearing will constitute the Parliament's contribution to the Eastern Partnership summit, which is foreseen in spring 2020.

Statement by the Chair of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee (AFET) David McAllister on the current situation in Iraq and Iran. “I am gravely concerned by the latest violent developments in Iraq, after the recent death of Iranian General Soleimani and Iraqi militia leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. There is now an immediate need to diffuse tensions and for all parties involved to exercise serious restraint in order to stop the cycle of violence and reprisals.
After so many years of joint efforts to combat ISIS and bring peace and stability to Iraq, and with the whole region clearly at stake, further confrontation and loss of human lives must be avoided. Preserving the Coalition is key in this regard.

Iran must stick to its commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The EU clearly supports the JCPOA agreement as a key factor in the global nuclear non-proliferation architecture and it remains a common interest. This major achievement for regional security, that aims to prevent a nuclear arms race, must be respected."
