In Bulgaria, the two biggest parties have agreed on a coalition government. A key element of the deal is that the post of prime minister will rotate after nine months. Nikolay Denkov of the liberal-conservative PP-DB bloc will take the post for the first nine months, followed by former EU Commissioner Marija Gabriel of the centre-right alliance Gerb-SDS for the next.

Early on Monday morning, a group of armed insurgents crossed the border from Ukraine, advanced several kilometres into the Russian border region of Belgorod and set up camp there. The New York Times has published a video showing the forcible expulsion or "pushback" of asylum seekers by Hellenic coast guard officers. The footage, provided by a humanitarian worker, shows asylum seekers - including women and children - being transferred from the shore to a boat on the sea and then being abandoned on a raft.
