A humanitarian disaster is unfolding in Nagorno-Karabakh, an enclave predominantly inhabited by Armenians within Azerbaijan's internationally recognised borders. For months Azerbaijan has blocked all access to the region, which has been declared the independent Republic of Artsakh by its Armenian inhabitants. Armenia has called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. Europe's press voices dismay and demands action.

UN Blue Helmets were attacked near Pyla/Pile in Cyprus on Friday. A video shows UN vehicles being pushed aside by bulldozers and a group of peacekeepers being physically assaulted. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNZ), which is recognised only by Turkey, was working on the construction of a road which the UN says would run through the buffer zone on the divided island.

The Brics states have convened in Johannesburg for a summit which ends on Thursday. The group's goal is to push for a redesigned global order, South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor said. In addition to members Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, more than 30 other countries from Africa, Latin America and Asia are attending the meeting and a number of them want to join the group. Europe's press sees the optimistic mood clouded by differences.
