European Council

President Michel invited 27 leaders to the EU-ASEAN Summit and the December European Council. The European Council meeting will focus on Ukraine, energy and economy, security and defence, Southern Neighbourhood and external relations.

The leaders of the G7 met on 12 December to reflect on progress of their cooperation under Germany’s Presidency to jointly address global challenges at a time of severe geopolitical crisis and critical moment for the world economy.

The Council approved conclusions on Iran, added 20 individuals and one entity to the Iran human rights sanctions list, and added four individuals and four entities to the list of those subject to restrictive measures for undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine.

The Council added eight individuals and four entities to the list of those subject to EU restrictive measures against the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in view of continued ballistic-missile-related activities.

The Council approved conclusions on the civilian CSDP compact.

The Council approved conclusions on Yemen.

The Council approved conclusions on Iran.

The Council adopted a decision setting up a military partnership mission to support Niger in its fight against terrorist armed groups.

The Council prolonged the mandate of the maritime Operation ATALANTA, the capacity-building mission EUCAP Somalia, and the training mission EUTM Somalia, until 31 December 2024.

The Council reached a political agreement to increase the overall financial ceiling of the European Peace Facility by €2 billion in 2023.

The Council and the European Parliament reached a provisional political agreement on a proposal to strengthen sustainability rules for batteries and waste batteries.
