Ausschuss für Auswärtige Angelegenheiten (AFET) - Europäisches Parlament

A delegation of AFET Members will travel to Mexico and Costa Rica from 31 October to 2 November 2023 to discuss bilateral cooperation and ongoing geopolitical challenges. During their visit Members will meet with parliamentary counterparts, government representatives of both countries and non-governmental organisations.
In Mexico, they will discuss joint efforts to boost the EU-Mexico Strategic Partnership, ongoing work to conclude the modernised Global Agreement between the EU and Mexico and security and migration crises. In Costa Rica the focus of discussions will be the EU-Costa Rica bilateral and multilateral cooperation, geopolitical, security and migration challenges, Costa Rica's region role in Central America, the EU's Global Gateway initiative, and parliamentary ties.

On 24 October, the Foreign Affairs Committee will exchange views with José Manuel Albares, Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, on the external policy priorities of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
MEPs will have an opportunity to discuss the key challenges of EU external policy, including the consequences of the ongoing Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas and the ongoing military operations in Gaza, as well as enhancing unity, coherence and effectiveness of EU external action.

On 23 October 2023, the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Subcommittee on Security and Defence will hold a hearing on "The situation in Syria 12 years after the revolution: Standstill, Dynamics, EU response, and Future Prospects?". It will provide a reflection on the political, social and economic consequences of the ongoing conflict, which has shaped the country's development in the twelve years since the Revolution.
Members will discuss with experts the geopolitics of the region under the changed circumstances, in which international and regional actors including Iran, Russia, Türkiye and the United States, but also local groups, are operating. The hearing will contribute to the upcoming Recommendation on the situation in Syria that the Foreign Affairs Committee is preparing and which will provide recommendations for concrete political and diplomatic fine-tuning of the EU's Syria policy.
This hearing will take place during the European Parliament Gender Equality week and will be an opportunity to highlight the impact of conflict on women and the importance of women's contribution to conflict resolution and sustainable peace, in line with the UN resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.
