MEPs will assess on Wednesday the situation of Syrian refugees in Turkey and the results of the financial support provided by the EU. Representatives of the European Commission will brief MEPs in a joint meeting of three Committees: Foreign Affairs (AFET), Development (DEVE) and Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE).
They will focus on the EU Facility for Refugees in Turkey, set up in 2015 to support refugees and host communities in Turkey. It has a total budget of €6 billion, of which 97% has been programmed, with the remaining 3% to be allocated by the end of the year. Out of the 5.6 million Syrian refugees in the world, Turkey hosts close to 3.7 million, according to UNHCR data.
